The Bigger Picture Agency provides photographic and video services to businesses and the media. Established in 2009 and incorporated as a limited company in 2014, the team of five is based in Newcastle and works with clients across the North East and beyond.
It’s one of the North East businesses which has received support from the North East Business Support Fund which is part financed by the European Regional Development Fund, with the business being awarded a grant of £2,608.75.
As soon as the first lockdown was announced in March 2020, the business had £20,000 of previously-booked work cancelled. This was compounded by a downturn in future bookings, resulting in a loss of income in both the short and longer term. A significant proportion of The Bigger Picture’s income was through live events, such as conferences, and the team knew that this area may not recover for some time.
To counter this, directors Angela Carrington and Jeanette Doherty applied for funding to allow the business to diversify its offer and bring its aerial film and photography services in-house. This would enable the team to offer more drone services, particularly to the construction industry which often uses drone footage to record progress of developments, carry out roof surveys and produce promotional footage.
The grant from the North East Business Support Fund has funded the purchase of a drone and its associated equipment, and The Bigger Picture team is now undertaking the relevant training and flight tests (funded by the business).
“I don’t think this is a step we would have taken without this support,” said Angela Carrington. “This has enabled us to plug a huge gap in our turnover and without it jobs might have been lost.
“We know that we’re unlikely to be able to carry out as much live event photography for a long time and the new equipment allows us to make the most of our work in other areas, like construction.”
The North East Business Support Fund is administered by North East Enterprise Agency NBSL.
NBSL is approved by BIS, Customer First, and Investors in People and has a team of experienced accredited business funding advisers, who work with people and businesses across the North East to identify solutions that aid development and growth.
NBSL relaunched The North East Business Support Fund (NEBSF) in 2018. The inaugural round of funding was launched in 2012, since then NBSL has provided funding and support to businesses from an array of sectors spanning all corners of the region with a recent impact report finding that the fund has yielded an impressive £4.40 economic boost for every £1 invested.
