Richard Hogg is founder and CEO of Newcastle-based Jackson Hogg, which specialises in recruitment, HR and training in science, technology, engineering and manufacturing-driven sectors. Richard explains why he chose to start his own business and what advice he’d offer to other entrepreneurs.
Can you tell us a bit about Jackson Hogg and the services it offers?
We work with clients in the UK, USA and Europe, making the process of on-boarding talent at all levels – from professional entry level through to board appointments – easier, faster and more guaranteed.
Our clients range from SMEs to blue chip international businesses and we become a part of their team, working with each business to achieve their growth plans.
What are the circumstances that prompted you to start your own business?
I’ve always had the desire to build a business and I also wanted to be able to work on philanthropic projects at the same time. Setting up Jackson Hogg allows me the flexibility to do this, and I’m constantly looking for opportunities to make our services better.
How did you manage risk and what business support did you access to get up and running?
The business is 100% self-funded to date and we’re constantly re-investing profits to ensure that it’s robust and can weather any storm.
As the business has grown we’ve appointed non-executive directors who are all high-profile figures in industry with a track record of overseeing the kind of growth that we’re looking to achieve.
Since I founded the company in 2012 it’s grown organically to a team of 33 people who share our values and deliver results for our clients.
What are the benefits of being your own boss?
Freedom, and the ability to seize opportunities and move fast with new ideas. I can be quite disruptive and I love creating new business models and services, like our Jackson Hogg Open Network, which enables our clients to connect with candidates directly.
You can have control over the business’s pace of growth and choose to create new services, or work with new clients wherever and however you want to.
By setting up your own business you also have the ability to set your own values, which at Jackson Hogg are all about helping people and caring for people.
What would you say to others considering a new business launch right now?
Starting a business isn’t for the faint-hearted and you need to be confident that you understand the demand for your product or service.
Having said that, there are always opportunities out there, irrespective of the global political and economic environment, and if you are out of work or looking for something new, this can be a brilliant time to invest your ‘sweat equity’ in creating something.
With the right company values, the value you can add to people’s lives is enormous. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the journey and feel as though we’re just getting started.
