Kick-starting Tourism Package

Thank you for your interest in the Kickstart tourism grant funding. Unfortunately, this grant funding is now oversubscribed and unavailable for further applications.

Whilst this fund was specifically for businesses who operate in the visitor economy, there is also a grant fund available for the wider economy. Businesses in the visitor economy are not excluded from this fund, so we would encourage you to find out more about the SME Restart and Recovery Fund here.

Please note, if you have already been successful in receiving a grant from the Kickstart tourism fund or have an expression of interest in progress, you will not be eligible to apply for the SME Restart and Recovery Fund.

Businesses in tourist destinations across the North East LEP region (County Durham, Gateshead, Newcastle, North Tyneside, Northumberland, South Tyneside and Sunderland) that depend on visitors for income can apply for grants of £3,000.

Delivered through the North East Growth Hub, more than £500,000 has been allocated for eligible businesses in the North East LEP region to help them adapt following the coronavirus pandemic.

For a business to be eligible to apply for this grant funding, it must meet the following criteria:

  • operate in the visitor economy i.e. be a business that largely relies on leisure and / or business visitors for its income. Businesses involved in providing accommodation, transport, food & beverage and cultural activities or events for visitors are likely to be eligible
  • be able to demonstrate that the business has been adversely impacted by COVID-19
  • it must be based in either Northumberland, Tyne and Wear or County Durham
  • it must be an SME - employ fewer than 250 people and have a turnover of less that €50M
  • it must have been trading prior to 01 March 2020 and still be actively trading.
  • it must generate 51%+ of its income from commercial sources – donations, grants and contracts awarded without a competitive process are not classed as commercial income.
     
  • Ineligible Sectors – ERDF funding cannot support the following Sectors:

         Businesses that deliver Statutory Services such as a schools / doctors     
         surgeries / care homes

         Agriculture, Forestry, Fisheries and aquaculture, Processing and marketing of
         agricultural products, Shipbuilding, Insurance/brokerage companies, Primary
         production, Coal or steel, Synthetic Fibres.

Businesses can use the funding to pay for:

  • specialist professional advice e.g. human resources, accountants, legal, financial, IT / digital
  • purchase minor equipment to adapt or adopt new technology in order to continue to deliver business activity or diversify in response to COVID 19.

Grants cannot be used to part fund a capital purchase therefore the maximum cost of a single item is £3k ex vat.

Grant rates are 100% with no obligation for businesses to contribute financially. The Grant rate is 100%, but businesses will have to make the initial payment for the support or purchase and claim the grant back. The VAT element of any support or purchase is not eligible for grant support.

You must not pay for any equipment or services before you have been officially awarded the grant, any payments made to prior to signing your funding contract will not be eligible for funding.

Please note: no other form of application, other than the official Expression of Interest form, will be accepted.  We will keep this page up to date with the latest information, but in the meantime, we have included some information about the fund below.
