NE1 is hosting some specific sector consultations about air quality, the Clean Air Zone, bridge tolls and a Low Emission Zone. With information being provided by Newcastle City Council, we want to make sure our city businesses know about the consultation and where to find all published information.
We would also like to encourage and support our businesses to have a voice and potentially create a submission for consideration to the council as a sector.
Newcastle, Gateshead and North Tyneside councils are running a public consultation on air quality. Government modelling has shown pollution on parts of the A167 Central Motorway, the Tyne Bridge and a section of the A1058 Coast Road exceeds legal limits. The consultation, which is underway now and closes on Friday 17th May 2019, is in response to a stated requirement to reduce nitrogen dioxide levels, possibly to be extended to include particulates, in these areas in the shortest possible time.
The consultation also describes measures for improving air quality in Newcastle city centre including by a charging Clean Air Zone, bridge tolls and a Low Emission Zone. All would carry varying degrees of cost to road users and access restrictions. If fully implemented the impact on the city, and how people travel to work, for shopping and leisure etc., is likely to be significant.
